 Milestones in First Church of Christ History

  • July 1,  1931 – The current area of Wright-Patterson near Huffman Dam, including the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Fairfield Air Depot are dedicated “Wright Field.”
  • August 21, 1933 – Church of Christ at Fairfield-Osborn began in a tent revival. The church met in the home of Mrs. Lonamae Cantrill for about three months. The church then moved to the Knights of Pythias Hall in Osborn, meeting on Sunday afternoons.
  • April 1934 – Moved to morning and evening services in a rented building at 68 South St. in Fairfield. A number of ministers from area churches shared the preaching duties.
  • September 1935 – Moved to a building on Main St in Osborn until November.
  • November 1935 – G.T. Bateman held a revival meeting and remained for six weeks, reorganizing the congregation and drawing up a charter with 35 members. George BonDurant called to be the first minister.
  • September 1943 -  Congregation rented the American Legion hall on Broad St, Fairborn for Sunday services. All other other meetings were held in homes throughout Fairborn.
  • June 1947 – The first women’s group (Women’s Council) is formed.
  • January 31, 1948 – Wright Field and Patterson Field merged into Wright-Patterson AFB.
  • 1949 – Villages of Fairfield and Osborn vote to merge into a single village.
  • August 1950 – City of Fairborn officially chartered by the State of Ohio
  • Fall 1950 – Property purchased at 404 N. Maple St.
  • August 12, 1951 – Ground breaking ceremony held for the new building
  • June 26, 1952 – First services held in church basement. 66 people present.
  • 1953 – Portion of the property sold to city for a library.
  • June 26, 1955 – First services held in completed sanctuary. 104 people present
  • August 14, 1955 – Dedication service held in completed building.
  • May 1956 – George Flemming and a number of members establish a congregation in Enon, OH
  • June 1956 – Women’s Christian Service Group formed.
  • March 29, 1959 – Record attendance of 402 for Bible School set on Easter Sunday
  • October 30, 1960 – Ground breaking for Bible School and office annex
  • July 2, 1961 – First classes held in new annex.
  • April 1963 – Growing congregation necessitates having two services
  • 1964 – Wright State University begins as a branch campus of Ohio State and Miami Universities.
  • January 27, 1965 – Purchase 7 acres of land on Old Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd for potential expansion. Sold to Greater Dayton Evangelical Association in 1965 to establish a new congregation.
  • February 1966 – Approximately 50 members help form the Southern Hills Church of Christ.
  • March 1966 – Additional property on 344 N.Maple Ave, purchased for parsonage and additional parking.
  • October 1, 1967 – Wright State University is created as an independent university
  • January 1970 – Purchased approximately 10 acres of land on Fairfield-Yellow Springs Rd (near Rona Hills) for potential expansion.
  • January 1971 – A group from our congregation with assistance from another congregation formed First Christian Church of Huber Heights.
  • June 1979 – Repurchased library property from the city
  • March 30, 1986 – First service (Easter Sunday) in newly renovated sanctuary in library building
  • August 1993 – Property on Fairfield-Yellow Springs Rd. sold
  • November 1993 – Maple Ave property sold to Head Start.
  • January 1994 – Purchase for Church of God facility at 206 W. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd
  • February 20, 1994 – Held first services at Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd.
  • May 2006 – Began Imagine Capital Campaign to raise funds for new multi-ministry building
  • March 4, 2007 -  Ground breaking for new building
  • January 2008 – Dedication and first service in new building.
  • 2 September 2012 – First service at rented building, 1166 Kauffman Ave

Inclement Weather Policy - In case of inclement winter weather, First Church of Christ will follow the lead of Fairborn Schools to determine if the office or activities will be cancelled or delayed. If the schools are not in session we will follow the lead of WPAFB. Please drive safely. Closings or delays will also be broadcast on Channels 2 and 7.
